Immigration Voice plans to organize a nationwide meet-the-lawmaker drives in every state and every district. Two of our volunteers – Varsha and Sanjay – would be helping us to organize this. If you would like to meet with your lawmakers during this recess, then please email Varsha and Sanjay at varsha@immigrationvoice.org and sanjay@immigrationvoice.org respectively and simply put “Need Meeting Info” in the subject line of Email. They will send you all the information that you need on seeking the appointment, taking the right material with you, making a good case for reform and doing the follow-ups if necessary.
Feel free to ask Varsha and Sanjay for any other questions that you have. They have met with their Congressmen and Senators a few times and they would be glad to help you do the same thing in your state and district.
A Perfect Opportunity:
This is the perfect time to meet the lawmakers, as they would be in their constituencies just before they go back to work on Immigration this spring and summer. In order to capitalize on this opportunity, it is very important that everyone meet with his or her legislators locally during this Easter recess of Congress. The members of the House will be in their districts between 2nd April and 13th April. The members of the Senate will be in their states between 2nd April and 9th April.
Please use the time between now and the Easter recess to seek appointments to meet with your Congressmen and Senators in order to draw their attention on the need for reform in high-skills immigration.

The question I was asked by the Congressional staff repeatedly was - 'If so many thousands are impacted, why are we seeing just 4-5 coming to DC asking for help? Why aren't we hearing about from our constituents? Why is it always 'the outsiders' approaching us? Why aren't they visiting us? Why aren't they writing letters to us?'. So many questions with no answers!

-Many in the immigrant community come from countries where corruption is endemic.
-USCIS controls our economic freedom, movement, where we work and reside, and if we "rock the boat" our file might be "deep-sixed" and we would have no recourse. Who knows, a petty officer could browse a news group, read this and sick Home land security goons me. I would never know why. We don't all have the resources to hire powerful lawyers and fight for a couple years. Did they take 120 days to renew my EAD because I visited my congressional representative's staff? Maybe.
-"Transparent" and "accountable" are words not often used to describe USCIS and her parent Homeland Security. But they do have complete authority over our lives. Kafka could write a book! (Oh, he did.)
-Many Americans are now afraid to join political protests for fear of being arrested and hence losing their job, etc. Why should immigrants be more politically active than Americans? They are publicly targeted by politicians as causing all the problems in the land (Tancredo for example) with out any serious rebuke. In my country Tancredo saying things he's said would have been considered a hate crime.
-There are many Americans (even level headed ones) that do not believe that immigrants have any right to push for change in US policy. Regardless of whether it is change for the better, and there is no other constituency to demand improvements. The argument goes that regardless of the request, if you don't like it you should go home. (Of course the answer is to flip it and say: should Americans be treated poorly when living in my country? Sheepish looks ensue...)
-Depending upon your level of risk aversion, it is often rational for the immigrant (who's stay is tenuous) to stay home and be "good" which means pliant.
In summary, the US scares the freak'n crap out of a lot of people. And so they "behave" as best they can. This should not be a revelation to the staffers.
I don't agree that we should be pliant. We should be in their face because they deserve it.
As for me, I've come to the point that I think being kicked out of the US would be like getting fired from a crappy job I didn't have the guts to quit. :D

Per lawmaker we recently met(WA state), it is imperative that we also get our message across to lawmakers in the midwest and south.
Due to resident strength and businesses employing H1B people(who end up getting stuck in retrogression) in the west and east coasts and large metropolitan cities, the lawmakers in these areas are slightly more aware of our issues. They also get funding from local companies that employ people stuck in retrogression.
However, representatives in the MIdwest and South do not get a lot of funding from local businesses that employ H1Bs and have other local issue that they would rather pursue(agriculture, etc.).
It is imperative that awareness is spread in the midwest and south !!

Congratulation...
I hate to see you leaving, you need to fight for others. Who knows somebody close to you might get stuck in this mess. IF everybody leave just because they got what they need than its not fair. If you think IV has helped you in any way then each of us put some effort to help IV and its members.

Thanks for doing this. I would suggest you to collect more data with real life stories and create a template, post it here. Then everyone can send the same to senator and white house. Anyway thanks for your work
I'm done. I posted whatever I had on WhiteHouse.gov and wrote to my Senator. I think the strength is in numbers - so the effectiveness of this depends on the number of people that write in - Even if people dont include their personal stories, just the fact that you will include your address when you write to your senator makes it personal. Just my 2 cents!!!

He is considered among the future generation of leaders in america by the media. He is a front runner for vice president. He is the best political resource that could be used by IV. But he would not do anything as that would affect his image as a conservative republican. He doesnt understand the pain suffered by many who are not born here like him but are raised here (as white as he is), waiting for their GC as a dependent with the fear that if they turn 21 they will be deported seperating them from their families.
why single out one guy, he is doing what is good for him. What do you expect if the even people registered on this site are not willing to do do something to help themselves. The attidude is i have EAD/AP i am free or I am EB1/2 its just a matter of time till i get the GC. Even the politicians are using us for their own agenda and to score political points.

Desi consultants should be heavily fined or shut down if they get caught in filing multiple petitions. Why doesn't USCIS take reasonable steps to avoid these kinds of fraud. i hate it when desi consultants hire people from business background and file a H1B for them as a DBA's or programmer analysts or QA's....!!!

I doubt this law will cause any trouble. For analogy, there are laws around carrying current insurance papers. Once I didnt have my current insurance, since every six months new ones get mailed and I forgot to keep them in the car. I showed the police officer my previous expired insurance and mentioned that the insurance-id is the same. He accepted it and asked me to carry the current copy in future.

How about this:
Most of us claim to be highly experienced, highly educated, in diverse fields. A while back there was an announcement about serving for the military and in exchange for the service, you get a green card/ fast track to citizenship. In a similar vein, if there is a progam in place where we commit to educate students in colleges, high schools and other accredited institutions for a certain fixed period (say 1-2 yrs), we earn the green card sooner. This would be more platable. We utilize our skills, teach students, serve the community and shows our commitment to our prospective adopted country. It fits in like a glove with what President Obama is calling on citizens to do, his "army of teachers" ready made
This way we will be able to channelize positive support and there will be nothing that antis could argue against.

There is a question on part 7 of AP efiling. I guess, same question is also there in paper form as well. Could somebody please explain as to what to do about this. Here is the question:-
